The name of Side derives from the ancient name for the Pomegranate, the symbol of fertility. This symbol can be seen on a number of artefacts, in particular the coins of the period. The ancient city of Side was founded approximately 700 years BC. It is know that before the Turks settled in the area a number of civilisations (Hittites, Syrians, Persians, Greeks and Romans) lived ther. Its good relations with Rome and the boundless wealth of those days provided the opportunity for the construction of the magnificent buildings. Importent structures worth seeing today are the ancient Side Theatre, the Temples of Apollo and Athena, City Gates, the Aqueducts, the Harbour of Side, the Monumental Fountains and the Side Baths. Some of these structures have had their restoration completed while some ancient remains have been rebuilt ( such as the Theatre, the Harbour and the Temple of Apollo).
